We can focus on a few of the most innovative end uses. Some of the most exciting and high profile applications are in the BMW i3, which is one of the world s first purpose-designed electric vehicles. The BMW i3 makes extensive use of composite materials in its body structure. In addition, SGL Automotive Carbon Fibres, a joint venture between SGL Group and the BMW Group, converts recycled carbon fibres into non woven fabrics. These are converted into components, such as the roof of the BMW i3, using the resin transfer moulding process [10]. [Pg.10]

The nonwoven roof of the BMW i3 is already being made of recycled carbon fibre, collected from the company s plants in both the USA and Germany, and the structure of the backseat frame of the car also employs them. [Pg.267]

The research in recycling carbon fibre has been undertaken for nearly two decades [2], There are three recycling routes pyrolysis [3], thermo-oxidation [4] and decomposition of thermoset resins in an liquid medium such as nitric acid [5] and supercritical fluids [6, 7], All these routes are to remove matrix by converting it into small molecules leaving carbon fibres. Recently, several small companies have emerged for the recycling business, such as the Materials Innovation Technologies in the US and the Recycled Carbon Fibre Ltd in the UK. [Pg.255]

In this work, we report the change of wetting and interfacial bonding of T800S carbon fibre recycled using a pyrolysis process. A low cost epoxy resin and a low cost vinyl ester resin were used for the assessment. These two low cost resins would be candidates for manufacturing recycled carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites for the automotive industry. [Pg.256]
