The great advantage of the RDE over other teclmiques, such as cyclic voltannnetry or potential-step, is the possibility of varying the rate of mass transport to the electrode surface over a large range and in a controlled way, without the need for rapid changes in electrode potential, which lead to double-layer charging current contributions. [Pg.1936]

The combination of electrochemistry and photochemistry is a fonn of dual-activation process. Evidence for a photochemical effect in addition to an electrochemical one is nonnally seen m the fonn of photocurrent, which is extra current that flows in the presence of light [, 89 and 90]. In photoelectrochemistry, light is absorbed into the electrode (typically a semiconductor) and this can induce changes in the electrode s conduction properties, thus altering its electrochemical activity. Alternatively, the light is absorbed in solution by electroactive molecules or their reduced/oxidized products inducing photochemical reactions or modifications of the electrode reaction. In the latter case electrochemical cells (RDE or chaimel-flow cells) are constmcted to allow irradiation of the electrode area with UV/VIS light to excite species involved in electrochemical processes and thus promote fiirther reactions. [Pg.1945]

MSW incinerators (qv) are typically designed to reduce the volume of soHd waste and to generate electricity in condensing power stations. Incineration of unprocessed municipal waste alone recovers energy from about 34,500 t/d or 109 million metric tons of MSW aimuaHy in some 74 incinerators throughout the United States. This represents 1.1 EJ (1.05 x 10 Btu) of energy recovered aimuaHy (18). Additionally there are some 20 RDE facihties processing from 200 to 2000 t/d of MSW into a more refined fuel (19). Overall, the RDE provides an efficient and reproducible mass transport and hence the analytical measurement can be made with high sensitivity and precision. Such well-defined behavior greatly simplifies the interpretation of the measurement. The convective nature of the electrode results also in very short response tunes. The detection limits can be lowered via periodic changes in the rotation speed and isolation of small mass transport-dependent currents from simultaneously flowing surface-controlled background currents. Sinusoidal or square-wave modulations of the rotation speed are particularly attractive for this task. The rotation-speed dependence of the limiting current (equation 4-5) can also be used for calculating the diffusion coefficient or the surface area.
