In closed systems, an induction period is observed imtil virtually all of the oxygen has been consumed by reaction with radicals. 

In open systems, polymerization will only occur if the generation of radicals can compete successfully with the replenishment of oxygen, that is at high rates of initiation. Some initiation systems rely on the rapid consumption of oxygen by photochemical means (see Sect. 2.3).
