Finally, we should note that seeds of some species possess greatly reduced or immature embryos. Seeds of orchids have minute, poorly-differentiated embryos and, as mentioned above, no endosperm. Other species produce seeds with embryos which are much more developed than those of the orchids but nevertheless are still immature. This happens, for example, in Fraxinus spp, and Ranunculus ficaria where development of the embryo continues after the seed (actually a samara in Fraxinus) has been liberated from the mother plant. [Pg.13]
