In the thirties, serious efforts were undertaken to elucidate the reactions taking place in the pyrolysis process and to formulate the kinetics. A cracking reaction, globally represented by Ai Az + A, really proceeds through a sequence of elementary steps involving radicals  

Propagation by reaction of the free radicals with reactants 

Termination by reaction of free radicals to form stable products
