Assisted anion transport through a BLM was first reported by Behr and Lehn, who investigated the transport of amino acids at high pH with a quaternary ammonium salt as carrier 58). Selectivity was based only on the difference in partition coefficients of the amino acids. Since then, many charged carriers have been utilized for the transport of anions via a coimter-transport mechanism.
