Quantum world

The quantum world—however strange—is the atom s world. Quantum mechanics provides a powerful tool to probe the atom. Much of this book is devoted to using that tool to discover the properties of atoms, molecules, and compounds. [Pg.28]

The nanoscale world is exciting because it is governed by rules differing from those in the macroscopic, or even microscopic, realm. It is a world where quantum mechanics dominates the scene, and events on the single-molecule scale are critical. What we know about the behavior of material on our scale is no longer true on the nanometer scale, and our formularies must be re-written. In order to study this quantum world, a quantum-mechanical probe is essential. Electron tunneling provides that quantum-mechanical tool. [Pg.191]

Remarkably, the Wigner distribution could be observed in a number of systems by physical experiments and computer simulations evading the whole quantum world from atomic nuclei to the hydrogen atom in a magnetic field to the metal-insulator transition (Guhr, Muller-Groeling and Weidenmuller, 1998). In this contribution we address the situation in QCD and in hadrons. [Pg.247]

Approaching the quantum world, content will likely be introductory. At the introductory level mathematical derivations should be at a minimum. The restrictions and meanings of the results are far more important. [Pg.24]
