Quantum mechanics problem-solving mindset

Existence of a Problem-Solving Mindset among Students Taking Quantum Mechanics and Its Implications... [Pg.155]

This chapter describes the problem-solving mindset that many chemistry students bring to quantum mechanics classes that was discovered during a study... [Pg.156]

In the course of this chapter, we will routinely use the terms problem solving and problem-solving mindset. We do this deliberately because we believe that the tasks students are working on in quantum mechanics are, in fact, problems for them at the time that they first encounter them. [Pg.158]

What effect does a problem-solving mindset have on students For the students in this study, most of the difficulties they had learning quantum mechanics resulted from the incongruity between the structure of quantum mechanics and the problem-solving mindset, and not from conceptual difficulties within the material of quantum mechanics. [Pg.170]

The term paradigm was popularized by Thomas Kuhn in his book. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, first published in 1962. Borrowing the word from linguistics, Kuhn used the term to indicate a specific way of viewing scientific reality, the mindset of a scientific community. Some of Kuhn s examples include Copemican astronomy, Newtonian dynamics, and quantum mechanics. Each of these paradigms affected the choice of problems that were considered worthy of solution, as well as acceptable approaches to solving those problems. [8]... [Pg.24]
