2 Quantum-Mechanical Treatment The First Born Approximation 

The treatment of the interaction of a quantum-mechanical system with radiation is described in detail in the literature (Feil 1975 Cohen-Tannoudji et al. 1977 Blume 1985, 1994). Only an outline will be given here. 

The Hamiltonian H of a system in a radiation field, in the absence of interaction with the field and a perturbation Hamiltonian H describing the interaction with the field, is given by
