The staff of the QCPE consisted of one secretary, three work-study students, and a single quantum chemist, who prepared the newsletter. There was minimal interaction with users requesting programs, and no one with whom to consult for advice. There were 1251 members listed in 1969, and 1929 programs were sent out. By 1970, users worldwide totaled 1700, of whom there were six to seven times as many nonquantum as quantum chemists.
