Purification of mercury

Purification of Mercury.— For the above purpose, and also for many other purposes in physical chemistry, pure mercury, [Pg.218]

If the amount of mercury is smaller, it is best shaken for ten or twenty minutes (according to the degree of impurity) with a solution of mercurous nitrate acidified with nitric acid. It is then well washed with distilled water, and dried by means of filter paper. Still better, the purified mercury is poured in a fine stream, by means of a funnel with drawn-out point, through a layer of mercurous nitrate solution acidified with nitric acid, contained in a tube to the lower end of which a bent capillary tube (i mm. bore) is sealed (Fig. 70). The length of the latter should be so fixed that mercury ceases to flow from it, when there is still a layer of mercury in the wide tube of about 2 cm. in depth. By means of this apparatus, the mercury is obtained dry. [Pg.219]

In filling this tube for the first time, pure mercury must first be poured into the tube, and then the solution of mercurous nitrate and in no case should impure mercury be poured through the tube. [Pg.219]

Capillary Electrometer.—For the purpose of determining the point of balance on the bridge wire (p. 214), one may employ either a sensitive galvanometer, or an electrometer. For our purpose, the most convenient instrument is the capillary electrometer, of the form shown in Fig. [Pg.220]

Pure dry mercury is poured intd the limb A of the electrometer so as to cause the meniscus to stand about two- [Pg.220]

Purification of Mercury by Filtration. Take a smooth paper filter, puncture its cone three or four times with an ordinary needle, and put it into a glass funnel. Put the latter with the filter into a cylinder and transfer 5-6 ml of contaminated mercury onto the filter. What happens What impurities are removed from mercury in this way ... [Pg.264]

This reaction, preceded by the formation of Hg[Co(CO)4]2 from sodium amalgam and dicobalt octacarbonyl in a hydrocarbon solvent, is the basis of a recently proposed method for the purification of mercury 37). However, the cost of dicobalt octacarbonyl makes the widespread application of this mercury purification method unlikely. Treatment of Hg[Co(CO)4]2 with trimethylphosphite also liberates mercury, producing the nonionic derivative [Co(CO)3P(OCH3)3]2 rather than a salt 26)... [Pg.247]
