Fig. 7.1. Schematic illustration of indirect photodissociation for a one-dimensional system. The two dashed potential curves represent so-called diabatic potentials which are allowed to cross. The solid line represents the lower member of a pair of adiabatic potential curves which on the contrary are prohibited to cross. The other adiabatic potential, which would be purely binding, is not shown here. More will be said about the diabatic and the adiabatic representations of electronic states in Chapter 15. The right-hand side shows the corresponding absorption spectrum with the shaded bars indicating the resonance states embedded in the continuum. The lighter the shading the broader the resonance and the shorter its lifetime. Fig. 7.1. Schematic illustration of indirect photodissociation for a one-dimensional system. Cro, by contrast, acts purely as a repressor. When it is bound to its high-affinity site at OR3, it prevents repressor synthesis by obstructing the access of polymerase to the left-hand promoter. In the absence of repressor, RNA polymerase can bind to the Cro promoter, and Cro can be synthesized along with the early phage genes to its right. [Pg.131]

Noncompetitive inhibitors interact with both E and ES (or with S and ES, but this is a rare and specialized case). Obviously, then, the inhibitor is not binding to the same site as S, and the inhibition cannot be overcome by raising [S]. There are two types of noncompetitive inhibition pure and mixed. [Pg.445]
