Pulmonary embolism shock

Occurs as a result of circulatory insufficiency associated with overwhelming infection Occurs when obstruction of blood flow results in inadequate tissue perfusion. Examples include a severe reduction of blood flow as the result of massive pulmonary embolism, pericardial tamponade, restrictive pericarditis, and severe cardiac valve dysfunction Occurs as a result of blockade of neurohum oral outflow. Examples include from a pharmacological source (ie, spinal anesthesia) or direct injury to the spinal cord. This type of shock is rare. [Pg.204]

Cardiopulmonary arrest in adults usually results from arrhythmias. The most common arrhythmias are ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (PVT), often in patients after myocardial infarction (MI) or pulmonary embolism (PE). In children, cardiopulmonary arrest is often the terminal event of progressive shock or respiratory failure. [Pg.87]

Normal physiologic response to fever, exercise, anxiety, pain, dehydration may also accompany shock, left-sided heart failure, cardiac tamponade, hyperthyroidism, anemia, hypovolemia, pulmonary embolism, and anterior-wall myocardial infarction (Ml). [Pg.261]

Embolism associated with long flights is generally due to thrombus formation in deep leg veins (deep-vein thrombosis, or DVT). The thrombus may move to the pulmonary circulation, where effects on lung function depend on the extent of the blockage produced. A massive embolus may occlude the main pulmonary artery, resulting in hypotension, shock and possibly death multiple small emboli cause little problem and are lysed by the fibrinolytic system. Sometimes surgical removal of the embolus is necessary, but in Pats/s case clot lysis was successful and she made an uneventful recovery. [Pg.79]
