Pull on Guy Wires

The maximum pull on the guy wire occurs when the wind blows along that wire. Each wire must be designed to take care of the entire wind reaction at the collar. 

The actual vertical component will be a function of the total pull on the guy wire, which is the sum of the pull by wind pressure and the initial tension as follows  

The value of the reaction at the collar,, may be determined by calculating the moments about the base of the tower (the top of the foundation.) 

The resisting moment arm at the collar is hj. Therefore, the reaction, i, may be calculated as follows  

6 = angle that the guy makes with the vertical, degrees.
