Finally, in order to verify molecular-length scale healing, an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) (15 kV, super-ultrathin window (SUTW) Saphire detector, amplification process time (AMPT) of 25.6 ps) analysis was conducted using a Hitachi 3600 N scanning electron microscope equipped with an EDAX genesis detector. The rationale was that if the CP molecules diffused into the PSMP matrix, the chemical composition near the interface will show a certain gradient. In this study, a specially prepared EDS specimen was used. To prepare the EDS specimen, a SENB specimen made of pure PSMP was fractured and a very thin layer of CP was placed in between the fractured surfaces. Next, the EDS specimen was healed as described in Section 6.1.1. An EDS analysis was conducted at and around the healed interface of the EDS specimen. [Pg.228]

The essential slow modes of a protein during a simulation accounting for most of its conformational variability can often be described by only a few principal components. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of both modified and unmodified PSs were determined by DSC analysis, and thermomechanic analysis was controlled by TMK. The results are given in Table 8. It is seen from Table 8 that the highest glass transition temperature (410 K) was obtained with chlorohydrinated PS and that of the lowest (370 K) with olefinic PS. Three types of rubbers EPDM, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and nitrile (NBR) were selected and the plastics include PP, PS, styrene acrylonitrile (SAN), and PA. It was shown that the ultimate mechanical properties such as stress at break, elongation, and the elastic recovery of these dynamically cured blends increased with the similarity of the rubber and plastic in respect to the critical surface tension for wetting and with the crystallinity of the plastic phase. The data for our analysis were collected from production runs of about 10000 steps, corresponding to a total simulation time of approximately 2 ps. By NMR analysis and mass spectrometry, PS-A and PS-B are found to be 1-O-decanoylpanal and 1-O-dodecanoylpanal, respectively. As a minor component, 1-O-tetradecanoylpanal has also been isolated. Based on this analysis it is evident that materials which are biaxially oriented will have good puncture resistance. Highly polar polymers would be resistant to puncture failure because of their tendency to increase in strength when stretched. The addition of randomly dispersed fibrous filler will also add resistance to puncture loads. From some examples such as oriented polyethylene glycol terephthalate (Mylar), vulcanized fiber, and oriented nylon, it is evident that these materials meet one or more of the conditions reviewed. Products and plastics that meet with puncture loading conditions in applications can be reinforced against this type of stress by use of a surface layer of plastic with good puncture resistance. Resistance of the surface layer to puncture will protect the product from puncture loads. An example of this type of application is the addition of an oriented PS layer to foam cups to improve their performance. [Pg.94]

Two relatively new techniques, matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-lime of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) and electrospray ionization (FS1), offer new possibilities for analysis of polymers with molecular weights in the tens of thousands. PS molecular weights as high as 1.5 million have been determined by MALDI-TOF. Recent reviews on the application of these techniques to synthetic polymers include those by Ilantoif54 and Nielen.555 The methods have been much used to provide evidence for initiation and termination mechanisms in various forms of living and controlled radical polymerization.550 Some examples of the application of MALDI-TOF and ESI in end group determination are provided in Table 3.12.
