Prostaglandins in Schizophrenia and Depression

The role of RGE in schizophrenia is not well studied increased levels of PGEj, however, have been described (Kaiya et al., 1989). PGEj induces the production of lL-6, which is consistently described to be increased in schizophrenia. Moreover, an increased COX-2 expression—which is stimulated by PGEj—was found in schizophrenia (Das and Khan, 1998). 

PGEj is a molecule of the proinBammatory cascade and stimulates the production of proinflammatory cytokines, e.g. IL-6, the expression of cyclooxygenase-2, and—as a cofactor—the expression of IDO. Therefore an increased secretion of PGE would be expected in depressive disorders,
