Properties of Glial Cells

Intermingled with the neurons in the brain are a variety of other cell types. The most common of these satellite cells are glial cells. These make up virtually about one half of the total volume of the brain and exist in several forms such as astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and Schwann cells. Membrane properties of glial cells exhibit fundamental differences from neurons, the chief difference being their passive nature. Unlike neurons, most glial cells are not excitable and do not fire action potentials. Membrane potential measurements of... [Pg.110]

Most interestingly, PrP106-126 was toxic to neurons in culture, whereas it induced activation of glial cells (Forloni etal, 1993 Forloni et al, 1994). These data suggested that the distal part of the flexible N-ter-minal domain of PrP may be central to both the process of PrP PrP = transition and the pathogenic properties of abnormal PrP isoforms. [Pg.176]

HT transporters are located in vesicular and synaptic membranes of presynaptic serotonergic neurons, in the membranes of glial cells and blood platelets. Inhibitors of 5-HT uptake transporters enhance the concentration of 5-HT in the synaptic cleft thereby intensifying the action of 5-HT on its postsynaptic receptors, a useful property in case of serotonergic dysfunction. [Pg.327]
