STEROIDS PART 2 COMPOUNDS RELATED TO PROGESTERONE, CORTISONE, AND CHOLESTEROL... [Pg.161]

Steroids such as progesterone, testosterone, and cortisone have been derivatized and analyzed with this method. Cortisone was chosen to demonstrate the enhanced sensitivity obtained with the derivatization/SIMS technique. The SIMS results for underivatized and derivatized cortisone are presented in Figure 10. The ions that are observed from cortisone include the molecular ion [M + H]+ (m/z 361), the silver cationized ion [M + Ag]+ (m/z 467 and 469), and the fragment ion at m/z 407 and 409 corresponding to the loss of the OCHCH2OH group. [Pg.183]

Q2 The adrenal cortex secretes three main groups of hormones mineralocorticoid (e.g. aldosterone), glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisol, cortisone and corticosterone) and gonadocorticoids (mainly androgens with small amounts of progesterone and oestrogen). Aldosterone is a salt-retaining hormone which acts on the kidney to facilitate sodium and water reabsorption. [Pg.153]

Julian worked for Glidden for seventeen years, developing several new products from soybeans. He mapped out commercially viable syntheses of progesterone, testosterone, and cortisone from soya sterols. From soya protein he developed Aero-Foam, a fire extinguishing foam for oil and gasoline fires, which saw use by the U.S. armed forces during World War II. [Pg.640]

The first liquid-solid separation of the corticosteroids was carried out using a silica stationary phase with a mobile phase of chloroform-dioxane (100 5) to separate cortisol, cortisone and 11-de-oxycortisol (Touchstone and Wortmann, 1973). Most separations using silica stationary phases have used variations of the mobile phase originally described by Hesse and Hovermann (1973). Thus, a mobile phase of dichloromethane-ethanol-water (93.6 4.7 1.7) has been used to resolve prednisolone, cortisol, prednisone, cortisone, corticosterone, deoxycortisol and 17-a-hydroxy-progesterone on a silica stationary phase (Trefz et al., 1975). Other mobile phases which have been used include hexane-methylene chloride-ethanol-acetic acid (63.8 30 6 0.2) for the determination of plasma prednisolone (Loo et al., 1977), a mixture of 1.5% methanol and 0.2% water in chloro-... [Pg.248]
