The BWC works toward general and complete disarmament, including the prohibition and elimination of all types of weapons of mass destruction.

The United States has been active in its participation in international efforts to specifically control the spread of biological and chemical weapons. The Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, and Stockpiling of Bacteriological and Toxin Weapons and their Destruction (also known as the Biological Weapons Convention) and the Chemical Weapons Convention have been discussed in detail in other publications,4 5 as have various confidence-building measures,5 which have met with limited success.
