Processible -Conjugated Polymers

Long-lived photoluminescence, at 826 nm, is reported (t 15 (is) for thin films of the processable, -conjugated polymer, poly(3-hexylthio-phene) (93JA8447). Excitation of the n—n transition with 518 nm light (So >S ) yields only very weak luminescence of 826-nm light, even at 18 K. The emission is enhanced, to point where it can be observed at room temperature, when the excitation wavelength is 250 nm, but it is completely quenched by oxygen. Prompt fluorescence decays within... [Pg.290]

Processable conjugated polymers can readily be incorporated into electronic devices through the spin-coating process. The devices that have attracted most attention are field effect transistors (FETs) and thin film diodes, the latter primarily as light emitting diodes (LEDs). Typical structures are shown in Fig. 9.28. [Pg.370]

Further advances in the chemistry of processible conjugated polymers and focused work on the physics of electroluminescence in these materials have led to the development of flexible, almost entirely metal-free LEDs [55]. These polymer-based LEDs could be competitive in display applications because of the potential ease, low cost of fabrication, and large surface area of devices based upon processible polymers. [Pg.584]

Inherently processable conjugated polymers is not only technologically important. There is also a considerable scientific interest in these materials, since they enable the study of conjugated systems in solution and in the melt. Such studies have lead to the discovery of phenomena such as thermochromism and solvatochromism in conductive polymers. [Pg.316]

Another advantage of the inherently processable conjugated polymers is that conventional polymer physics can be applied to these materials. This is a significant advantage, since many experimental techniques and theoretical models for characterization of conventional polymers are available. [Pg.317]
