Preparation, prevention review

At the present time the threat of more terrorist attacks is very real. Protection from and survival of such attacks depends upon three P s and three R s planning, preparation, prevention, recognition, response, and review. 

The Federal Food, Dmg and Cosmetic (FDAC) Act defines dmgs as "...articles intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man..." and "articles (other than food) intended to affect the stmcture of any function of the body of man." In the United States and elsewhere, the introduction of a new dmg is subject to a sequence of weU-defined stages of development and approval (4). Each stage involves either scientific testing or submission and preparation of data and analysis review (Fig. 2). 

Subsequent chapters deal with individual classes of plastics. In each case a review is given of the preparation, structure and properties of the material. In order to prevent the book from becoming too large I have omitted detailed discussion of processing techniques. Instead, with each major class of material an indication is given of the main processing characteristics. The applications of the various materials are considered in the light of the merits and the demerits of the material. 

Biocatalysis has emerged as an important tool for the enantioselective synthesis of chiral pharmaceutical intermediates and several review articles have been published in recent years [133-137]. For example, quinuclidinol is a common pharmacophore of neuromodulators acting on muscarinic receptors (Figure 6.50). (JJ)-Quinudidin-3-ol was prepared via Aspergillus melleus protease-mediated enantioselective hydrolysis of the racemic butyrate [54,138]. Calcium hydroxide served as a scavenger of butyric acid to prevent enzyme inhibition and the unwanted (R) enantiomer was racemized over Raney Co under hydrogen for recycling. 

OWENS has prepared antibodies to PCP in goats. When administered to mice the PCP levels in blood rose tenfold as an antibody-bound form that was readily excreted in urine. BROWNE tested the selfadministration by rats of 1,000 compounds related (and not related) to PCP, some of which produced PCP-like effects. One compound that was self-administered prevented the entrance of PCP into brain. BALSTER gave a general review of the effects produced by PCP in laboratory animals and showed that some effects were similar to those produced by amphetamine, some to barbiturates, and some to antipsychotics. This response profile makes PCP a unique drug that stands alone in its complex effects and toxicity. 

Similarly to the above-mentioned entrapment of proteins by biomimetic routes, the sol-gel procedure is a useful method for the encapsulation of enzymes and other biological material due to the mild conditions required for the preparation of the silica networks [54,55]. The confinement of the enzyme in the pores of the silica matrix preserves its catalytic activity, since it prevents irreversible structural deformations in the biomolecule. The silica matrix may exert a protective effect against enzyme denaturation even under harsh conditions, as recently reported by Frenkel-Mullerad and Avnir [56] for physically trapped phosphatase enzymes within silica matrices (Figure 1.3). A wide number of organoalkoxy- and alkoxy-silanes have been employed for this purpose, as extensively reviewed by Gill and Ballesteros [57], and the resulting materials have been applied in the construction of optical and electrochemical biosensor devices. Optimization of the sol-gel process is required to prevent denaturation of encapsulated enzymes. Alcohol released during the... 

The preparation of promethium trihalides has been mentioned by Scherer (9). However, the radioactive nature of these compounds has prevented any calorimetric or solubility investigations so far, and they make only one fleeting appearance in this review.
