Preparation Methods of Collagen-Based Biomaterials

Numerous methods for synthesis and characterization of collagen-based biomaterials have been reported. The preparation methods depend on type of co-partner used to obtain biomaterials with improved and proper characteristics for targeted application. The combination of natural and/or synthetic polymers, inorganic micro-, nanoparticles, specific crosslinkers to protein chains, and thermal and/or mechanical treatments for collagen are described in the literature. [Pg.443]

Complex biomaterials contain one natural polymeric component which has a role in increasing the biocompatibility of the final product, and a synthetic polymer component which improves the mechanical characteristics of the natural material, as well as its resistance to enzymes action, decreases/increases the time of biodegradation, limits the swelling characteristics and decreases the solubility of protein. The selection of the synthetic polymers envisages the synthesis of biomaterials in strict correlation with application in order to obtain biomaterials with specific response to changes of physiological factors. [Pg.443]

The preparation methods of collagen-based products allows the obtainment of solution, colloids, and solid materials as micro- and nanopowders, films, fibers, sponges, porous structures and bulk materials suitable for different areas of application. [Pg.443]
