Catena prefix

The polymer is commonoly referred to as poly(dimethylsiloxane), but the IUPAC name is either poly(oxydimethylsilanediyl) or catena-poly[(diphenylsilicon)-p-oxo] depending on whether one uses the nomenclature rules for organic or inorganic polymers. The prefix catena refers to a linear polymer, not branched or crosslinked. 

Chain compounds may be explicitly specified as such by using the prefix catena . 

Ordered networks, in contrast to irregularly cross-linked networks, possess only structurally equivalent monomeric units. They are classified as 0-, 1-, 2-, and 3-types according to whether the ordered network structure extends to zero, one, two, or three dimensions in space (Figure 2-7). They may also be called zero, one, two, or three dimensional. The lUPAC nomenclature utilizes the prefixes catena, phyllo, and tecto for the 1-, 2-, and 3-types. 

Structural prefixes should be italicized and connected with the chemical formula by a hyphen cis-, trans-, anti-, syn-, cyclo-, catena-, o- or ortho-, m- or meta-, p- or para-, sec- (secondary), tert-(tertiary), v- (vicinal), meso-, as- for asymmetrical, and 3- for symmetrical. 

A CRU is selected and named. The name of the polymer is the name of the CRU prefixed by the terms poly , catena or other structural indicator. In order to arrive at the preferred CRU, the seniorities of the constituent subunits are considered, as well as the preferred direction for the sequential citation. 

Special prefixes closo-, nido- arachno-, catena-, hypho-, dado-, isodoso-, isonido-, isoarachno-, canasto-, anello-, predoso-, hyperdoso-, pileo-, and conjuncto- are found in the literature to describe borane structures. 

The overall topology of the structure is specified as follows. A neutral chain compound is called catena preceded by a multiplicative prefix, di , tri , etc., to indicate the number of branches in the molecule. Likewise, cyclic compounds are called cycle preceded by the appropriate multiplicative prefix. A mixed chain and ring compound is classified as an assembly composed of acyclic and cyclic modules and, if neutral, is named as catenacycle , with appropriate multiplicative prefixes inserted as in Example 3 below. 

Eing and chain structures can be designated by prefixes cyclo- and catena-, e,g,j cyclo-octasulphur (or octasulphur for X-sulphur), catenasulphur (or polysulphur for [X-sulphur).
