Predicting Whether a Metal Will Dissolve in Acid

PREDICTING WHETHER A METAL WILL DISSOLVE IN ACID 

In Chapter 14, we learned that adds dissolve metals. Most acids dissolve metals by the reduction of ions to hydrogen gas and the corresponding oxidation of the metal to its ion. For example, if solid Zn is dropped into hydrochloric acid, the follovdng reaction occurs. 

Metals above H2 on the activity series dissoive in acids, whiie metais beiow H2 do not dissoive in acids. 

IUniike most other acids, nitric acid dissolves some metals below Hz in the activity series. 

An important exception to this rule is nitric acid (HNO3), which through a different reduction half-reaction dissolves some of the metals below H2 in Ihe activity series.
