Powder Mechanics Measurements As opposed to fluids, powders may withstand applied shear stress similar to a bulk solid due to interparticle friction. As the applied shear stress is increased, the powder will reach a maximum sustainable shear stress T, at which point it yields or flows. Preparation of Specimens for Mechanical Measurements. The specimens for mechanical testing were obtained by blending the powdered polymer with 1.5 phr of Ba-Cd stabilizer, 5 phr of CaC03, and 0.5 phr or lubricant (stearic acid). The dry blend was processed in a roll mill at 200°C for 5 minutes. The 1-mm sheets obtained were preheated in an oven at 200°C for 5 minutes and molded in a molding press at a pressure of 80-100 kg/cm2. The science of soil mechanics was integrated with the related field of powder mechanics and reduced to industrial practice by Jenike [1] in 1964. Since then, it has been possible for industry to reliably measure the flowability of powders and relate the measurements, in engineering units, to the design requirements for silo flow. However, Jenike s publication was neither the first effort to quantify flowability nor the last. New testing methods continue to be introduced, with varying degrees of success. In many cases these alternative measurement methods are the result of an industrial necessity and reflect some shortcoming of the Jenike method. In other cases, they exist because the Jenike method is not known to the people involved or is not relevant to their problem. Thermal solid-state reactions were carried out by keeping a mixture of powdered reactant and reagent at room temperature or elevated temperature, or by mixing with pestle and mortar. In some cases, the solid-state reactions proceed much more efficiently in a water suspension medium or in the presence of a small amount of solvent. Sometimes, a mixture of solid reactant and reagent turns to liquid as the reaction proceeds. All these reactions are called solid-state reactions in this chapter.
