Potential magnetic field

Hall effect If a current (I) is passed through a conducting crystal in a direction perpendicular to that of an applied magnetic field (H), the conductor develops a potential (V) between the faces which are mutually perpendicular to both the direction of the current and the magnetic field. This is known as the Hall effect the magnitude of the potential difference is given by... [Pg.199]

The source is brought to a. positive poteptial (I/) of several kilovolts and the ions are extracted by a plate at ground potential. They acquire kinetic energy and thus velocity according to their mass and charge. They enter a magnetic field whose direction is perpendicular to their trajectory. Under the effect of the field, Bg, the trajectory is curved by Lorentz forces that produce a centripetal acceleration perpendicular to both the field and the velocity. [Pg.47]

The important outcome from this transformation is that now the non-adiabatic coupling term t is incorporated in the Schrodinger equation in the same way as a vector potential due to an external magnetic field. In other words, X behaves like a vector potential and therefore is expected to fulfill an equation of the kind [111a]... [Pg.689]

The quantum mechanical importance of a vector potential A, in regions where the magnetic field is zero, was first recognized by Aharonov and Bohm in their seminal 1959 paper [112]. [Pg.690]

By using the property that ions are deflected in a magnetic field in proportion to both the square root of their m/z values and the potential through which they have been accelerated, it is possible to measure the m/z values very accurately. [Pg.402]

Measurement by Electromagnetic Effects. The magnetic flow meter is a device that measures the potential developed when an electrically conductive flow moves through an imposed magnetic field. The voltage developed is proportional to the volumetric flow rate of the fluid and the magnetic field strength. The process fluid sees only an empty pipe so that the device has a very low pressure drop. The device is useful for the measurement of slurries and other fluid systems where an accumulation of another phase could interfere with flow measurement by other devices. The meter must be installed in a section of pipe that is much less conductive than the fluid. This limits its appHcabiHty in many industrial situations. [Pg.110]
