Potato chips sales are the highest in the snack food industry. The next big seller is the tortilla chip. Table 5 lists the sales figures for the major snack food products in the United States (5). [Pg.2259]

Associations in the food and related industries collect data on everything from soup to nuts, including potato chips, pineapples, sauerkraut, and a host of other products. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an anesthetic commonly used for dental procedures. Because of the euphoria caused by inhaling it, N2O is commonly known as laughing gas. It is licensed for use as a food additive and as an aerosol propellant. It is used to displace air from potato chip bags to extend shelf life and as the propellant in whipped cream canisters. In recent years N2O has become popular as a recreational drug, due in part to its ready availability to consumers. Although N2O is legal, it is regulated by the FDA its sale and distribution for the purpose of human consmnption are not permitted. [Pg.336]

The current world market for snack foods represents a volume of more than 4.2 billion kg, which is equivalent to approximately 34.8 billion of annual sales. The United States alone manufactures and sells approximately 61% of this. In 2002, the American and British people had the highest annual per capita consumption of snack chips that included potato chips, tortilla chips, and extruded snacks, with an average annual intake of 7.3 and 6 kg, respectively.
