Potassium hydroxide KOH solution strength

We make our own KOH and do not bother to boil it down. Initially, KOH solution is put in the electrolyte reservoir. The KOH, when it is first made, is at about a 10 to 12% solution. In the electrolysis process, the KOH solution becomes stronger as the water disassociates and is used up, leaving the KOH behind. Since more KOH solution is added to the system to maintain the proper level instead of distilled water, the solution gets stronger over time. Once the solution in the electrolyzer is at the ideal specific gravity, the electrolyte reservoir is replenished with distilled water instead of KOH solution. [Pg.123]

If you start with the exact specific gravity that you want when you first fill the reservoir, then afterward, simply replenish the reservoir with distilled water to the same level of your first fill. KOH is lost over time, but it is mostly the water that is used up in the process. [Pg.123]
