Potassium chlorate partial pressure

A certain mass of oxygen was collected over water when potassium chlorate was decomposed by heating. The volume of the oxygen sample collected was 720 mL at 25°C and a barometric pressure of 755 torn What would the volume of the oxygen be at STP (Hint First calculate the partial pressure of the oxygen. Then use the combined gas law.)... [Pg.884]

The value of i p is 27 for the thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate at a given high temperature. What is the partial pressure of oxygen in a closed container in which the following system is at equilibrium at the given temperature (This can be a dangerous reaction.)... [Pg.738]

Dalton s law of partial pressures is useful for calculating volumes of gases collected over water. For example, when potassium chlorate (KCIO3) is heated, it decomposes to KCl and O2 ... [Pg.176]

A mixture of gases always occurs when a gas is collected by displacement of water. For example, Figure 13.8 shows the collection of the oxygen gas that was produced by the decomposition of solid potassium chlorate. The gas is collected by bubbling it into a bottle initially filled with water. Thus the gas in the bottle is really a mixture of water vapor and oxygen. (Water vapor is present because molecules of water escape from the surface of the liquid and collect as a gas in the space above the liquid.) Therefore, the total pressure exerted by this mixture is the sum of the partial pressure of the gas being collected and the partial pressure of the water vapor. The partial pressure of the water vapor is called the vapor pressure of water. Because water molecules are more likely to escape from hot water than from cold water, the vapor pressure of water increases with temperature. This is shown by the values of water vapor pressure at various temperatures shown in Table 13.2. [Pg.467]

Sample Problem B Oxygen gas from the decomposition of potassium chlorate, KCIO3, was collected hy water displacement. The harometric pressure and the temperature during the experiment were 731.0 torr and 20.0°C, respectively. What was the partial pressure of the ox en collected ... [Pg.347]
