Polythiophene, sulfonate derivatives

Tran Van, E, M. Carrier, and C. Chevrot. 2004. Sulfonated polythiophene and poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) derivatives with cations exchange properties. Synth Met 142 (l-3) 251-258. [Pg.542]

Shortly after discovery of methods for preparation of organic soluble derivatives of poly(phenylene vinylene) and polythiophene, Wudl and coworkers reported preparation of each of these polymers with sulfonated side groups. The specific objective of this work was based on the idea that the anionic sulfonate groups could make the polymers self-doping , wherein the covalently linked anionic units could serve to provide charge compensation when the polymer backbone is in the oxidized (semiconducting) state. These first studies focused on the synthetic monomer and polymer chemistry. However, the authors reported in their papers that their newly synthesized conjugated... [Pg.366]

As an alternative to pendent sulfonate groups, polythiophene derivatives which possess pendent carboxylic acids have been investigated. The lower acidity of the carboxylic acid functionality (/7ATa 4.8) compared to... [Pg.843]

Three simple derivatives of polythiophene, namely the 5-oxide 63 [the sulfoxide of polythiophene poly(thi-ophene-I-oxide)], the 5,5-dioxide 64 [the sulfone of polythiophene poly(thiophene-1,1-dioxide)], and the 5-methyl sulfonium polycation 65 [poly(l-methylthiophe-nium cation)], were calculated with CNDO/2 and the SCF-crystal orbital methodology. The results, after scaling the band gaps to fit for polythiophene, showed that the band gaps of 63, 64, and 65 were 1.12, 0.48, and... [Pg.289]

Among various main-chain conjugated polymers, one of the most practically used may be the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) mixture [121-124], PEDOT is a polythiophene derivative that can be doped using sulfonic acid including PSS and redox active metals. Since the fraction of PSS is higher than that of PEDOT in commercial aqueous solutions, the material is acidic. Also due to long main-chain conjugation PEDOT-PSS shows deep blue color. These two characteristics somewhat limit applications of PEDOT-PSS. [Pg.37]
