Polysulfones by the Reaction of Acetylene with Sulfur Dioxide

The dried polymer is analyzed for sulfur the inherent viscosities are determined in dimethyl sulfoxide. Unsaturation is determined by catalytic hydrogenation in tetramethylene sulfone and examination of the infrared absorption in [Pg.27]

Inherent viscosity, ij, for 0.5 gm of polymer per 100 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide solution is determined at 30°C using an Ostwald-Fenske viscometer. [Pg.27]

Catalytic hydrogenation of copolymers was performed in a volumetric microhydrogenation apparatus. Tetramethylene sulfone is used as solvent and 10% palladium-on-charcoal is the catalyst. In each case the reaction is allowed to run for 18 hr to ensure complete reaction. The infrared spectrum of I showed the pertinent peak as listed in Table XI. To a 1-quart pressure vessel containing 500 ml of a mixture of 80% water, 20% methanol, 0.5 gm ammonium nitrate initiator, and 4.0 gm sodium lauryl sulfate is added 67.8 gm (1.06 mole) of liquid sulfur dioxide. The vessel is cooled to — 11°C and a mixture of 33.4 gm (0.62 mole) butadiene and 27.0 gm (0.40 mole) of tra/w-piperylene is then added. The reaction is allowed to proceed at room temperature for approximately 16 hr while being vigorously agitated. The insoluble polysulfone is washed with ethanol and dried to afford 119gm (93%) which contains 25.1 wt% S. The hydrocarbon portion contains 45 wt% piperylene and 55 wt% butadiene. The product is soluble in solfolane, /Mjhlorophenol and m-cresol at 100°C. [Pg.27]
