Polystyrene mold shrinkage

Dimensional stability of polystyrene resins is excellent, Mold shrinkage is small. The low moisture absorption (about 0.02%) allows fabricated parts to maintain dimensions and strength in humid environments. [Pg.1354]

Polyblends in which both phases are rigid are frequently called poly alloys. Poly (phenyl oxide) is blended with impact polystyrene to improve melt flow. Complete compatibility between the two phases is rare and was observed between poly (methyl methacrylate) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) by D. R. Paul and J. O. Altamirano. Thermoplastics are added to polyesters to reduce mold shrinkage. [Pg.13]

SAN copolymers are linear, amorphous materials with improved heat resistance over pure polystyrene. The polymer is transparent but may have a yellow color as the acrylonitrile content increases. The addition of a polar monomer, acrylonitrile, to tbe backbone gives these polymers better resistance to oils, greases, and hydrocarbons when compared to polystyrene. Glass-reinforced grades of SAN are available for applications requiring higher modulus combined with lower mold shrinkage and lower coefficient of thermal expansion. ... [Pg.103]

Glass-reinforced styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) is an exceptionally rigid material with good hardness, strength, and greater chemical resistance than polystyrene compounds. SAN has excellent processability and the lowest mold shrinkage of any thermoplastic available. [Pg.81]

A liquid preparation with solid polystyrene (0.6 g) dissolved in liquid styrene monomer (1.5 mL) was cast against a mold. Polymerization was accomplished with UV irradiation (21°C, 18 h). Solid PS was included to reduce the degree of shrinkage that occurred when monomeric styrene was photopolymerized [85]. In a similar manner, PMMA dissolved in MMA was cast against a Si master. Upon UV polymerization (with BME as the photoinitiator), a PMMA chip is formed. Nearly 100 PMMA chips can be replicated using a single Si master [223]. [Pg.37]
