The frequency of polyomavirus interstitial nephritis is 3%-5% in the population of renal graft recipients. When confronted with a deterioration of renal function, the diagnosis is made based on a biopsy, showing the characteristic tubular epithelium lesions, confirmed by immunohistochemistry (simian virus-40 labeling), that are often associated with inflanunatory cell infiltration into the interstitium.
