Ever since his first observations on polyneuritis gallinarum in 1890, Eijk-man was aware of the resemblance between this disease of fowls and human beriberi. Vorderman obtained more certainty for a common basis of these two diseases in 1896, when he established that in prisons in Java where poUshed rice was the staple diet beriberi was far more frequent than in prisons where unpolished rice was provided.
