Polymer-mediated synthesis

Another polymer-mediated synthesis used a lyotropic liquid-crystal (LLC) template to obtain 4- to 7-nm crystalhtes of Pd (Ding and Gin, 2000). In this study, Pd2+ was ion exchanged into the channels of a cross-linked LLC and reduced with H2. The resultant catalysts were found to be active for efficient hydrogenation of benzaldehyde.

The proper choice of the polymer is an important factor for success in polymer-mediated synthesis. A wide range of polymers are available, including both aliphatic and aromatic monomer-based organic and inorganic polymers. The polymers are usually prepared by polymerization of the appropriate monomers however, in some cases natural or modified natural polymers have been used. 

The coupling procedures employed in polymer-mediated synthesis have been adopted from the solution methods of synthesis and will be discussed later. When the desired sequence of the oligosaccharide has been built up on the polymer support, its isolation has to be carried out by cleaving from the polymer and final deblocking of the groups. The stereospecificity and yield of the final products have been comparable or better than in the solution method.
