Dendrimeric molecules, also known as cascade molecules or Starburst molecules, represent an architectural class of macromolecules different from both ordinary polymers of the linear or cross-linked classes and biopolymers of the carbohydrate or peptide classes. [Pg.74]

Two classes of micron-sized stationary phases have been encountered in this section silica particles and cross-linked polymer resin beads. Both materials are porous, with pore sizes ranging from approximately 50 to 4000 A for silica particles and from 50 to 1,000,000 A for divinylbenzene cross-linked polystyrene resins. In size-exclusion chromatography, also called molecular-exclusion or gel-permeation chromatography, separation is based on the solute s ability to enter into the pores of the column packing. Thermoplastics are the largest class of engineering polymer. They have linear molecules they are not cross-linked, and for that reason they soften when heated, allowing them to be formed (ways of doing this are described in Chapter 24). Monomers which form linear chains have two active bonds (they are bifunctional). A molecule with only one active bond can act as a chain terminator, but it cannot form a link in a chain. Monomers with three or more active sites (polyfunctional monomers) form networks they are the basis of thermosetting polymers, or resins. [Pg.230]

Another class of hydrocarbon binders used in propints are the carboxy-terminated polybutadiene polymers which are cross-linked with either tris[l-(2-methyl)aziridinyl] phosphine oxide (MAPO) or combinations with phenyl bis [l -(2-methyl)aziridinyl] phosphine oxide (Phenyl MAPO). Phenyl MAPO is a difunctional counterpart of MAPO which makes possible chain extension of polymers with two carboxylic acid groups. A typical propint formulation with ballistic properties is in Table 11 (Ref 83) Another class of composites includes those using hydroxy-terminated polybutadienes cross-linked with toluene diisocyanate as binders. Type 2 gels are essentially infinite molecular weight molecules Their three-dimensional macroscopic networks comprise structural components that are covalently linked through multifunctional units. This is a very broad class that includes linear polymers that have been chemically or radiochemically cross-linked into a permanent structure as well as networks that have been built up by the step or chain polymerization of difunctional and multifunctional monomers. [Pg.486]
