PET suitable for bottle manufacture is produced by a modified process. Here the high-viscosity polymer melt is subjected to a rapid quenching in water to produce clear amoiphous pellets. These are further polymerised in the solid phase at temperatures just below the T . This is useful to reduce aldehyde content, since aldehyde-forming degradation reactions occur less in the lower temperature solid phase polymerisations. Blends of iso- and terephthalates give amoiphous, transparent resins, mosdy yeUow in color. Heat-deflection temperatures are higher than those of 100% PC resins and depend on the iso- to terephthalate ratio. For example, a resin with a 1 1 ratio has a value of 160°C. These resins are flame retardant mechanical and electrical properties are similar to those of PC resins. The notched Izod impacts are lower at 150—300 J/m (4.7—5.6 ftlbf/in.), even in thick sections. It has been known since the early days that behavior of the aromatic polyamides (aramids) depends critically on the type of isomeric substitutions -para-substimtimis result in crystalline, while mefa-substitutions in amoiphous polymers (Kwolek et al. 1962). Similarly, the two aramids poly(m-xylene adipamide) and poly (hexamethylene isophthalamide), MXD6 and PA-61, respectively, show different miscibility, e.g., with aliphatic polyamides. Clearly, blind application of the segmental interaction strategy to aromatic or semi-aromatic polyamides leads to conflicts. However, the problem can be resolved considering p- and m-substituted phenyl as two different statistical segments (Ellis 1995).
