Waveguide studies with CPs initially started as an extension of waveguide studies with other, non-CP, polymers such as PMMA, polyimides and poly(vinyl pyridine). It is useful therefore to cite some typical performance parameters for PMMA, polyimide and poly(vinyl pyridine) which may be used as a comparison for the performance of CP-based devices cited in the sequel. For these three materials in sequence these are listed in Table 18-1. Table 18-2 gives nonlinear waveguide parameters for the best-performing CP, the poly(diacetylene) PTS compared with those of semiconductors and glasses, both on-resonance (i.e. at an absorption) and off-resonance. [Pg.511]
