Polyglycines esters

Besides polymerization, another type of polyreaction can be used for stabilizing model membrane systems. Recently, Fukuda et al.28) described polyamide formation via polycondensation in monolayers at the gas/water interface (definition of mono-layers see Sect. 3.2). Long-chain esters of glycine and alanine were polycondensed to yield non-oriented polyamide films of polyglycine and polyalanine. 

Abbreviations Ala, L-alanine Leu, L-leucine Glu(OBzl), 7-benzyl L-glutamate NHBu, n-butyl amide OBzl, benzyl ester PG, polyglycine NCA, A-carboxy-a-amino acid anhydride a-helix, right-handed a-helix , 3-sheet, anti-parallel /3-sheet. 

A variety of homopolypeptides were synthesized by the N-carboxy a-amino acid anhydride (NCA), activated ester, or azide methods 5 except for deuterium labelled samples and polyglycines. The physical state of these samples is in general a semicrystalline state. Poly(glycine) (MW = 5200) was purchased from Sigma Chemical Company.
