L of cultivating liquid with pH 8.2 was mixed with 16 kg oxalic acid acidified with 1 N sulfuric acid to pH 2.9 and was filtered through about 160 kg fossil flour and washed with 500 L water. The filtrate (about 5400 L) was alkalified to pH 7.8-8 with 10% sodium hydroxide and was filtered through fossil flour filter. Then it was passed through two column with polyacrylic acid cation exchange resin in sodium form (US Patent No. 2,915,432). 

Tanaka et al. devised a method for determination of the ions in acid rain in a single run [18]. The column used contained a polyacrylate weak-acid cation exchange resin (TOSOH TSK gel OA-PAK, 300 x 7.8 mm, 5 pm particle size). Water alone as the mobile phase only separated weak acid anions from strong acid anions as a group cat-... 

Weak-acid cation-exchange resins have weak fixed reactive sites such as the carboxylic group (-COOH). They are usually copolymers of DVB and acrylic or methacrylic acid [6]. The polyacrylic acid is shown in Figure 8.3, and properties are listed in the previous Table 8.1. 

Ion exchange resins are also useful for demineralising biochemical preparations such as proteins. Removal of metal ions from protein solutions using polystyrene-based resins, however, may lead to protein denaturation. This difficulty may be avoided by using a weakly acidic cation exchanger such as Bio-Rex 70 (which is a carboxylic acid exchange resin based on a polyacrylic lattice). 

Betaxolol is suppUed as a sterile suspension of 0.25% betaxolol HCl (Betoptic-S). The suspension is a unique formulation containing a polyacrylic acid polymer (carbomer 934P) and a cationic exchange resin, which is beUeved to increase the drug residence time in the eye (see Chapter 2). This product is the racemic compoimd, preserved with 0.01% BAC, and approved for twice-daily use.
