Poly 4- methyl styrene

At even higher pH values, metal catalysis is required for chlorination to proceed. Thus, at pH =11, nickel(salen) catalyzes the chlorination of adamantane, cyclohexane and toluene785 and manganese porphyrin promotes the chlorination of cyclohexane786. Selective side-chain chlorination by sodium hypochlorite under PTCs at pH = 8.5 has been used for benzylic chlorinations787,788 and for the functionalization of poly(4-methyl-styrene)789,790. Similarly, with calcium hypochlorite in acetic acid, ring chlorination is reported for toluene, xylenes, anisole and other activated aromatics791. [Pg.579]

Ishizu et al.194 synthesized hyperbranched macromolecules that resemble dendrimers. The synthetic approach involved the preparation of poly(4-methyl-styrene-b-PS-b-poly(4-methylstyrene) triblock copolymer by using naphthalene lithium as difunctional initiator. The 4-methyl groups of the terminal blocks were metalated with s-BuLi/tetramethylethylenedi-amine (TMEDA) complex in a molar ratio of 1 2. After removal of the excess s-BuLi by repeated precipitation of the living polymer and transfer of supernatant solution to another flask under high vacuum conditions, the polymer was dissolved in THF and was used as the initiator of a-methylstyrene at —78 °C. After the polymerization of a-methylstyrene, a small amount of 4-methylstyrene was added. The procedure of metalation of the a-methyl groups and polymerization of a-methylstyrene can be repeated many times to form a dendritic type hyperbranched polymer (Scheme 99). The characterization of the inter-... [Pg.607]

Poly(4-methylstyrene) has substantially lower values of Tg (116°C) and Tj (388°C) than either of the styryl-POSS homopolymers, 3a and 3b. The 4-methylstyrene copolymers 8a and 8b of the styryl-POSS monomers 2a and 2b, which contain only 1 mol % of the POSS monomer, exhibited lower values of Tg and (8a, Tg = 112°C and r = 378°C 8b, rg=113°C and r = 383°C) than those of poly(4-methyl styrene). However, as the mole percent of POSS increased to 9, the copolymers 7a and 7b exhibited higher values of Tg and Tj (7a, Tg= 132°C and r = 402°C 7b, Tg= 127°C and = 399°C), which are higher than those of pure poly(4-methyl-styrene). The Tg and T values increase with an increase in the mole percent of POSS. = ... [Pg.90]
