Yoshino et al. [358] have investigated a derivative with mesogenic ester groups, poly(bis(4-methoxy-4 -hcxyloxy biphenyl) dipropargyl malonate), and find electrochemical doping with BF4to occur to both the main chain and the mesogenic unit in the side chain. The x-ray diffraction indicates a smectic phase between 80 and 115°C. The formation of a layered structure in a mixture of the polymer with a smectic ferroelectric liquid crystal is also reported.
