Poly 3,3-bis chloromethyl oxacyclobutane

Two side reactions can occur during ring closure a spiro diether can be formed from the trichloropentaerythritol monoacetate in a simultaneously occurring reaction or a vinylidene compound, CH2= (CH2C1)2, can form from the monomer 3,3-bis(chloromethyl) oxetane [2,2-bis(chloro-methyl)oxacyclobutane] by a consecutive reaction. [Pg.949]

The polymerization occurs cationically with BF3 complexes. Temperatures below 0°C are necessary to obtain sufficiently high molecular weights. It is also necessary to work in solvents such as dichloromethane or SO2, since the monomer begins to solidify at 18°C. Polymerization temperatures of up to 300°C can be used if aluminum chloride, aluminum alkyls, aluminum hydride, etc., is used as initiator. The industrial process is carried out in bulk at 180-250°C with reverse (countercurrent) flow of monomer. [Pg.949]

There are numerous, fully worked examples in Dorset s book [7] including C o [8], waxes [9], perfluorotetracosane [10], and poly(3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxacyclobutane [11]. In the latter case, for example, the... [Pg.327]

Poly-3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxacyclobutane is a hard, rigid material with specific gravity 1.4. The mechanical properties of the polymer are not particularly outstanding when compared to those of other plastics materials however, there are no particular limitations, apart from a somewhat low impact strength. As will be noted later, most applications of the polymer arise from its very good chemical resistance rather than from its mechanical properties. [Pg.167]

Poly-3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxacyclobutane may be fabricated by injection moulding and extrusion it may also be applied as coatings by means of fluidized bed, solution or dispersion techniques. The majority of uses of the polymer are for articles which are required to withstand corrosive environments, especially at elevated temperatures. Typical applications include pump components, pipes and coatings for reactors and storage tanks. [Pg.168]
