Pollution and Health Effects of Anionic Pollutants

Saline and/or sodic soils are major agricultural problems throughout the world. High salt content in the soil is the dominant problem related to agricultural land use. Excessive amounts of salts have adverse effects on the physiological and chemical properties of soil, microbiological processes, and plant growth. [Pg.142]

Recently, cultivation in hothouses or greenhouses has become a general trend, and various vegetables such as squash, red peppers, lettuce, and cucumber are cultivated in greenhouses. Excessive use of chemical fertilizer has become prevalent, and residual fertilizer not used by crops tends to remain in the soil. This residual fertilizer is further concentrated by the continuous use of chemical fertilizer. [Pg.142]
