Polymers used for seat and plug seals and internal static seals include PTFE (polytetrafluoroeth ene) and other fluorocarbons, polyethylene, nylon, polyether-ether-ketone, and acetal. Fluorocarbons are often carbon or glass-filled to improve mechanical properties and heat resistance. Temperature and chemical compatibility with the process fluid are the key selec tion criteria. Polymer-lined bearings and guides are used to decrease fric tion, which lessens dead band and reduces actuator force requirements. See Sec. 28, Materials of Construction, for properties. [Pg.790]

However, other polymer composite materials also popular in solid-phase synthesis, such as polyethylene or polypropylene tea bags , lanterns, crowns, or plugs, are generally less suitable for high-temperature reactions (>160 °C). Chelation The nitropiazselenol is formed by adding 0.5 mL of 1% NPD in water and the samples allowed to stand for 1 hr at room temperature with occasional shaking. The resulting Se-NPD is then extracted into 2 mL chloroform with mechanical shaking for 15 minutes. The chloroform layer is removed, placed in small glass test tubes and evaporated in a vacuum oven ( 100 Torr) at 50. Diesel made predominantly from polyethylene has a higher proportion of paraffins and therefore a higher cloud point. The paraffins crystallize as the temperature is lowered, leading to small visible crystals forming in the diesel. It is these wax crystals that can plug filters at low temperatures. [Pg.401]

And although thermoforming is basically a rubbery solid deformation process, the viscoelastic character of the polymer may need to be understood, particularly for the plug-assisted forming process. Computer-aided design programs also may need polymer viscoelastic properties. The manufacture of pour point depressants for oils, particularly usefiil for diesel oils, is carried out by oxidative degradation of waste polyethylene and/or polypropylene (I) with ozone at 30-150 C. 1000 g waste (I) is exposed to ozone action at 150°C for 5 h giving the pour point depressant. The addition of 1 % depressant to diesel oil leduees the solidifieation of the oil from -20°C to -35°C and the temperature of filter plugging from -9 to -20°C [133]. [Pg.142]
