Plowing The OECD definition reads "plastic deformation of the softer component of a rubbing pair" [52], Presumably what is meant is displacement of material without separation, since the basic mechanism of abrasion is also plastic deformation.

Anyone who attempts to discuss tillage is considerably handicapped by the lack of an exact, narrow definition of the term, and by a variation in usage of this and related terms in different communities. According to Webster s Dictionary to till means to turn or stir (as by plowing, harrowing, or hoeing) and prepare for seed to sow, dress, and raise crops from and to cultivate. By this definition the terms till, plow, cultivate, and even seed are nearly synonyms. 

For those who are math-averse, if you really don t want to plow through all of the math in this chapter, you should at least read Section 5.1, and Sections 5.8 through the end. The other sections (and AppendixA) present definitions, proofs, and properties intended to help you truly trust and appreciate the power of the mathematical tool of the Fourier transform. Some of the properties given in Appendix A will be important in later chapters, so at least a quick look at that appendix would be helpful.
