Platelet-activating factor producers

Platelet-activating factor A mediator of platelet aggregation and inflammation that is produced in response to stimuli, such as white blood cells. 

Fatty messenger molecules include diacylglycerol, ceramide, platelet activating factor, the eicosanoids and resolvins. A summary of the reactions that produce some of these messengers is given in Appendix 11.7.

Phospholipase AjS (PLAjs) hydrolyze the sn-1 fatty acid residue from phospholipids and produce mostly saturated or mono-unsaturated fatty acids and 2-acyl-lyso-phosphohpids. PLAjS have not attracted as much attention as mammalian acylhy-drolases, PLA2S, which are involved in the production of bio-active hpids such as prostanoids and platelet-activating factor (PAP) [1, 2]. 

Thought to be produced by macrophages, eosinophils, and neutrophils within the lung, platelet-activating factor (PAF) is involved in the mediation of bronchospasm, sustained induction of BHR, edema formation, and chemotaxis of eosinophils. ...
