Planning professional assistance

Throughout the book, the person in charge of day-to-day operations is referred to as the laboratory operator. This is not an administrator or supervisor located in an office down the hall or in another building. The laboratory operator must be heavily involved in all aspects of planning. Only he can estimate space requirements, check a proposed layout for practical and safe operation, and recommend allowances for future expansion. Regardless of the amount of professional assistance available, the laboratory operator can expect to burn much midnight oil. During construction he must be available at all times to take care of those numerous problems nobody had predicted. 

Fascinating stories develop between the desperate entrepreneurs and the reluctant investors. Each venture is unique in its detail, but similar in its development. In 1906 Pierre was awarded a full professorship and position as chair of physics at the Sorbonne and Marie was promised a position as director of the laboratory which the university planned to create for Pierre. However, in April 1906 Pierre was killed when he stepped into the path of a horse-drawn cart. While this event personally devastated Marie, it was a pivotal point in her professional career. She was offered Pierre s chaired position at the level of assistant professor, making her the first woman in France to obtain a professorship and allowing her to both continue her research and financially support her family.

Being married has a stabilizing influence in that I am more focused on what I have to do in my career as opposed to wasting time. My wife knows that as an untenured assistant professor, I need to keep long hours in the lab initially. 1 try to be considerate of her in the actual number of hours I spend in the lab. Because my wife and 1 are employed in professional occupations, 1 know that I will have to scale back once we have children. By then, I plan to have tenure.
