We believe that essentially the same processes are important in the photolyses of 3-ter(-butyldiazirine and pentamethylenediazirine. In the former case the 11% of 1,1-dimethylcyclopropane found by extrapolation to zero pressure would be formed by the triplet path. There are good reasons to believe that this triplet molecule would be much longer lived than the corresponding vibrationally excited species (see Placzek and Rabinovitch and references cited by them). [Pg.254]

The rotational structure of the absorption bands as studied by Dennison and Ingram(58), Moorehead(i26), Norris and Unger(i32), Vedder and Mecke(i66) is greatly influenced by the interaction of vibration and rotation as discussed at the end of section 34. Great care must therefore be taken in evaluating the moment of inertia from the separation of the rotational lines. Taking the effect just mentioned into account Placzek and TeUer(i37) arrive at the value / = 5 3.10 g.cm, while Dennison and Johnston(59) find / = 5 47.10 g.cm corresponding to the distance = 1-11 A,... [Pg.182]

The following calculation was presented recently by G. Placzek and is reproduced here only for easier reference s sake. The publication of Placzek s paper has been delayed. [Pg.153]

It is worthwhile to remark that pile radius R and rod radius r are effective radii . They denote the radii at which the thermal neutron density, if extrapolated from the pile, would become zero. This is particularly important as far as the rod radius vq is concerned. As Placzek and Seidel have shown (MT-5) the thermal neutron density does not vanish at the surface of an absorbing rod but obeys the condition n< =. 710A dn /dr where A is the mean free path. It should be remembered, however, that even with this correction, the whole treatment becomes invalid if ro is small as compared with the mean free path. [Pg.564]

The explicit energy and angular dependence in the characteristic value problem (4a) can be eliminated, as first suggested by G. Placzek and G. VoIkofF [1] by introducing as variable, S (x), the number of fission neutrons produced per unit time at x ... [Pg.4]

The theoretical basis for the study of lattice vibrations in solids using slow neutrons has been given by Placzek and Van Hove [2]. Several experimental results of considerable interest to solid-state physics have been obtained [3], and the technique has been used to study the very interesting fundamental problem of the spectrum of excitations in liquid helium [4]. [Pg.20]
