Pipe taps

The fifth type of tap is unique in that the downstream tap location varies depending of the orifice P ratio. This tap is located at the vena contracta the location where the stream issuing from the orifice attains its minimum cross section. The location of this tap is defined from the upstream face of the orifice as is the D/2 tap. The downstream tap for corner, flange, and pipe taps is measured from the downstream face of the orifice. Vena contracta taps maximize the measured differential pressure. For modem transmitters this is not an important consideration and this type of tap is no longer widely used.

Gas-Liquid Mixtures An empirical equation was developed by Murdock [J. Basic Eng., 84, 419 33 (1962)] for the measurement of gas-liquid mixtures using sharp-edged orifice plates with either radius, flange, or pipe taps.

The hollowed-out twigs have been used as flutes, shepherd s pipes, taps for maple trees in syruping, blow guns and elk calls. Elder twigs are very flexible and thus used to make baskets.

An orifice meter is used to measure the flow rate of CC14 in a 2 in. sch 40 pipe. The orifice diameter is 1.25 in., and a mercury manometer attached to the pipe taps across the orifice reads 1/2 in. Calculate the volumetric flow rate of CC14 in ft3/s. (SG of CC14 = 1.6.) What is the permanent energy loss in the flow above due to the presence of the orifice in ft lbf/lbm Express this also as a total overall unrecovered pressure loss in psi.

The pressure difference measured by pipe taps, where the downstream tap is eight pipe diameters below the orifice, is really a measurement of permanent loss rather than of the orifice differential.
